Libraries and Literacy: Moving Forward

Where To From Here?

There have been various behind the scenes efforts conducted on behalf of the interest group:

CLA (by way of AfLIG) is a collaborator in the 2007 Summer Institute held by the Centre for Literacy in Montreal (late June 2007). The theme of the Summit is Libraries and Literacy. For more information and information on past Summer Institutes, see www.centreforliteracy.qc.ca/summer.htm

  • The Interest Group is looking forward to working with the Council on the implementation of the Conference Resolution on the establishment of the Pan-CLA Literacy Body.
  • contact has been made with the UNESCO Commission in Canada regarding International Adult Learners' Week (proposed for April 2007)
  • there is now a hotlink from the CLA site to ABC CANADA's Family Literacy Day microsite. AfLIG members are encouraged to participate in local family literacy initiatives and the FLD microsite provides much support to do this.
  • future collaborative opportunities have been discussed with ABC CANADA, including, participation in the Great Canadian Writing Contest and the "My Bee in a B-O-X" spelling bee project (held around International Literacy Day on September 8).
  • the final report for the Literacy Summit has been shared with ABC CANADA to include in their quarterly periodical, Literacy at Work.
